I got in touch with the project manager and head geologist at the mine
in Sussex. He said it was a volcanic rock, that it’s a fairly recent
(now recent
in geological terms can mean 10,000 years), and that there was volcanic
activity in this region more than 350 million years ago, so this piece
would have been brought in from another area.
We have a picture and a little story for Monday’s paper!
